Southern Competes at Sectional

The Southern High School Boys Track team competed for state berths along with 16 other area teams at the Rushville IHSA Sectional Meet on Saturday.

Only athletes finishing 1st and 2nd in their event, and those achieving a state qualifying mark or time, advanced to the Illinois Boys High School State track meet which will be held in Charleston (Eastern Illinois University) this weekend.

Two talented competitors from Southern will represent their school at this elite meet. Danny Morrison, a junior track stand-out for the Rebels, will compete in the 800 meter run at state after qualifying by capturing a second-place finish in the race at Rushville Saturday. Morrison reserved his state berth with a convincingly strong finish against tough competition in a time of 2:04.8. Joining Morrison at state this weekend will be freshman thrower,

Bobby Caldwell. Caldwell has been improving steadily in both the shot put and the discus this season. He made finals in both events at Rushville, but excelled greatest in discus by launching a personal best throw of 132'5". His effort in the event bettered his previous personal record by 12 feet and was good for a 2nd place finish at Sectional on Saturday.
