The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
Dr. Jon Schar,
1980 Southern Graduate - Area VeterinarianThis is the eighth in a series
about doctors in the medical field who graduated in the Quill area schools.
It is about Jon Schar, son of the late Bernie and Margaret Ross Schar rural Stronghurst.
Jon W. Schar. DVM
Dr. Jon W. Schar was born on the 31st day of December 1961 to the late Bernie and Margaret Ross Schar.
He had three older siblings. Sara Tracey, a retired teacher lives in Golden, Colorado, Lyman Schar, principal at Southern Junior High, and Jo Jancar, a registered dietician in Las Animas, Colorado with two daughters.
They grew up on his parents farm northwest of Stronghurst (outside of Olena). His father farmed and after the children were older, his mother began as 5th grade teachers aide for Mr Gibb. She then finished her education to become the 1st grade teacher at Southern for many years.
Jon attended schools in Stronghurst and Junior High in Media, graduating from Southern High School in 1980.
He was very active in high school and especially enjoyed playing football, serving as co-captain his senior year.
Upon graduation, Jon attended Western Illinois University for three years and then was accepted to the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine for four years.
Jon knew from very early in life that he wanted to be a veterinarian.
The story has been told of the time when Dr. Chuck Josephson was at the Schar farm working cattle and little Jon was up by the chute with Dr. Josephson, while his big brother Lyman was in the back pushing the cattle.
Apparently what Jon saw impressed him, as he entered veterinary practice with Dr. Josephson upon graduating from the University of Illinois School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987.
Jon credits Dr. Josephson and his parents for their help and for encouraging him to go after his dream of being a veterinarian.
Jon feels very fortunate to have been able to return to his home area to practice veterinary medicine and loves what he does, and values the relationships he has developed with his clients over the years.
He has been in practice at the Roseville Veterinary Clinic since returning from vet school in 1987, and today is in partnership with Dr. Rudy Corman and Dr. Kenny Davis at the Roseville clinic.
Jon married Lorrie Mattes of Sydney, Iowa who was the Warren-Henderson Farm Bureau manager before they were married.
Jon stays very busy by having a cow herd on the family farm with his brother Lyman, and spending time with his wife Lorrie, and sixteen-month-old son Spencer.
In his spare time, Jon enjoys time with friends and if given the chance, loves to hunt and fish.
Jon speaks very highly of his education at Southern, mentioning the positive aspects of smaller class size and more individualized teaching, and was glad he was given the opportunity to develop close relationships with his classmates. He is looking forward to his own children being able to grow up in this community, hoping they enjoy some of the same experiences that he had.
