Letter to Editor

Dear Editor,

Although I have no children in school, I am a taxpayer in the Southern School District. For that reason, I would like to express my opinion on the issues that are facing all of us.

If saving money, and improving curriculum are truly at the heart of the problems, I am not sure at all that a multi-school consolidation would be the answer-especially with schools that are 20 miles or more away.

I have grandsons who travel 30 miles (one-way) to school which means getting on and off in the dark in the winter time-first on, last off.

This cuts down considerably on available time for homework.

Living close to the Southern School, it seems to me we already have a lot of buses on the road.

Why not leave the inter-school athletics for high school only. This happens in many places. The parents that really want athletics for their children form clubs, with the fathers doing the coaching, whether it be wrestling, soccer, baseball, or football.

The schools in some places furnish gymnasiums, but not the other expenses-coaches, uniforms, busses, etc.

Has anyone ever totaled what is spent annually for these things. It should be enough to cover at least some curriculum improvements.

Even with the high school, I think it is very inappropriate to travel hundreds of miles to football and basketball games.

I have heard many others express similar feelings, but most people are afraid to speak out about it, saying it won't do any good anyway.

But, my opinion is that if we don't speak out, then we have no right to complain-either way.

So how about using the newspaper as a medium to encourage others to speak up and express how they feel. Letters MUST be signed to be printed.
