The Union School Board weighed maintenance projects for the elementary and high school buildings and selected six individuals to ask to serve on a school consolidation committee during their March 6 meeting.

The walk through began with the high school with the board seeing firsthand completed carpet, electrical, plumbing, storage, painting and locker repair projects as well as those that need to be done.

Areas toured included cafeterias, gyms, offices, storage areas and classrooms.

Maintenance Director Larry Gray pointed out an energy loss problem area around the glass surrounding the courtyard area, where a 40-degree difference in temperature has been spotted. Gray also recommended replacement of the two double-door entries to the courtyard, fixtures that are in the process of decay.

Some floor work is needed in the elementary gym near the doors to the outside where water has ruined several boards.

Superintendent Dean Irlbeck pointed out a number of additional overhead storage cabinets in the elementary halls which the PTC assisted in funding.

Board members also discussed suggestions for policy changes in the school handbook. Irlbeck asked them to bring additional recommended changes and clarifications with them at the next regular board meeting.

In other business, the board named six individuals to be invited to be included on a committee to continue exploring consolidation possibilities with Southern High School.

Kirk Lewis, Tim Ballard, Elizabeth Sanning, Pearl Heeg and Lonnie Brent, along with first alternate Mark Torrance will be sent letters formally requesting their participation from the district.

Current board member Doug Sams will chair the committee. Irlbeck was directed by the board to draft the letter.

All board members were present.

The board next meets March 20 at 6:30 p.m.
