Darcie Takes A Seat On La Harpe's City Council

Mayor Kenny Brown and the La Harpe City Council have a new participant in the business of city government starting this month.

Darcie Palmer, a Junior at LaHarpe High School is joining the City Council to take a closer look at how city government works to enhance her education in government and politics.

"Darcie is our Student Alderman to the LaHarpe City Council, and will be attending all Council meetings," Mayor Brown said. "She will be on certain committees, and will have a voice at all meetings."

Mayor Brown said Darcie will vote on all items discussed, but her vote will count only as an opinion.

"She will be attending a Legislative Day in Springfield, as well as a Reception at the Governor's Mansion later on in the year.

"This is a new program the City Council is trying to adopt in getting our youth involved in City Politics," Mayor Brown explained.

Darcie said, "I think it is very important to understand how Goverment works, and I see the need for someone my age to step up and show the youths side in things. I am also involved in a leadership academy where they ask us similar questions."

Darcie's internship will run from March until the end of the school year in May.

"We are excited about the opportunities this program will bring to Darcie and our future high school participants in La Harpe. It's also a way the adults on the council can keep more in tune with our youth," Mayor Brown said.

"I appreciate Ann Logan and the LaHarpe High School administration for allowing Darcie to work with the City Council."

Darcie's term and others that will follow will be from the start of school to the end of school. However, Darcie may extend through part of the summer because of the late start getting the program going.
