LaHarpe Council To Look Into City-Wide Clean-up Options

The La Harpe City Council, due to the expense of approximately $6,000 for the city wide cleanup, is looking into another option to be considered for residents.

To make the costs more feasible, one possibility being considered is adding a monthly fee to the water bills for the garbage service.

A meeting is to be scheduled with two of the garbage disposal businesses to see what options they have to offer.

The Council approved the annual farm report presented by City Attorney Richard Rasmussen.

The council discussed the building on Main Street that was damaged by fire last year

A city ordinance was passed to amend the current water hookup deposit from $50 to $100.

Eric Moe from McClure Engineering was present to inform the council of his recommendations for the city street maintenance. It was decided to let the motor fuel tax build up.

There will not be any major intersection work or any oiling and chipping the streets this summer. The council passed a resolution to use $15,000 of motor fuel tax for general maintenance of the streets to be done. McClure Engineering has put together a permit application for $1,800 for repair of leaky water mains.

A motion was passed to order three new vests for the city police department. The police department is currently working on a grant which would pay half of the cost of the vests.

The Hancock County smoke house, which is used as a training tool for youth in the county, is needing repair of its smoke machine. The council approved a $50 donation to go toward a new smoke house.

Discussion of having a student alderman from the high school for next school year was discussed. The student will work with the council as a learning experience.
