The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
In 1840 a party or marriage furnished the occasion for the whole neighborhood to converge and celebrate the occasion.
From near and far families traveled and stayed for the day or overnight.
For a marriage, following the ceremony a dinner of deer, turkey, fish, wild duck, grouse, or quail would serve as the main entree with the hostesses adding whatever delicacy possible from her limited resources.
Visiting with each other was a rare treat so the afternoon quickly passed into evening.
The older generation would say their goodbys, what little furniture would be shoved aside and the local fiddler would tune his violin for the coming dance.
Entertainment was self-made and enthusiastically enjoyed.
