The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
In the early days of Henderson County, school attire for students did not cost big bucks; in fact only minimal attention was made to the garb worn by boys and girls. The majority of boys went bareheaded and barefooted and both boys and girls wore home-made clothes spun from flax. (Tour the family and craft center in Nauvoo and you can see flax being spun into cloth.) Upon dismissal at the end of the school day, boys would reach the door, turn and then bow to the teacher while girls were expected to curtsey upon existing. Little attention was paid to a child's mind in those days and whatever they learned was considered to be enough. 1882 History of Henderson County
