The La Harpe school board held a regular meeting Monday night, July 22nd, in the School District Library.
Board members in attendance were Lawrence Johnson, Dan Horton, Larry Caston, Mark Irish, Barbara Cox and Ricky Johnson.
Also present were Jo Campbell, Charles Apt, Charlotte Davis, Pat Deitrich, Rod Myers, John Ourth, Tracey Anders, Steve Rodeffer, John Quigle, Pam Campbell, Lila McKeown and John Cook. Steve Rodeffer and Tracey Anders reported on the latest meetings of the Committee of Ten regarding possible school consolidation and Pam Campbell talked to the board regarding dual credit courses in the high school.
The board approved the employment of Denise Kost and Donna Jones as teacher helpers, Brandon Gooding as head 7/8th grade boys basketball coach, Tim Lafferty as assistant 5/6th grade boys basketball coach, and Brent Stewart as assistant boys Thunder basketball coach.
The board also approved the support personnel salaries for the 2002-03 school year.
In other business, the board
Elementary/Junior High Principal Charlotte Davis reported that a Fund Raiser to help pay for field trip expenses that students currently pay out of pocket is being scheduled for August 15-22.
The brochure will be passed out at registration. Purchase of any materials is voluntary.
Mrs. Cindy Jones and Mrs. Kathy Kendall attended a Project Choices conference in St. Charles on July 10th and 11th. Mrs. Davis will be attending an administrator workshop sponsored by the Illinois Principals Association on July 31-August 2.
High School Principal Charles Apt reported that Coach Jason Finch has been taking the Thunder girls basketball team to three basketball camps as well as competing in the leagues at Camp Point and the Burlington Y.
Ray Driskell, Thunder boys basketball coach has had two basketball camps for all age groups. One was held at La Harpe and one at Northwestern. The football passing league has started and will continue through July. Regular practice starts on August 14th and volleyball practice starts on August 19.

Anna Ziegler provided background music for the awards banquet at the State FFA Convention and has been asked to play the piano for one of the activities at the State Fair.
April Horton received her State FFA Degree and was installed as XI FFA President for 2002-03.
Our chapter received a Century Challenge Plaque for obtaining 100% FFA membership of students enrolled in agriculture classes for 20 years.
Fifteen FFA members and Mr. Mealiff enjoyed bowling at Burlington on June 29th and eighteen went to the La Harpe Pool and Pizza Plus on July 13th for two chapter summer fun meetings.
A wiener roast is planned for the next meeting on August 7th.
Mr. Mealiff judged projects at the Hancock County 4-H Fair on July 8th.
Five students from La Harpe plan to exhibit at the Section XI Vo-Ag Fair at Macomb.
They are Anna Ziegler, Justin Mohr, April Horton, Rebekah Bruns and John Bruns.
April Horton and Anna Ziegler plan to attend Illinois State FFA Leadership Camp at Monticello, July 31-August 3.
