Matt Kane, a Junior at Southern High School, would like to see the sport of golf offered in the Southern District. Matt had done his research well before attending the school board meeting on Monday evening, requesting that golf be offered to students.
Matt had talked with the Blandinsville Golf Club and they had agreed their course could be used for practices free of charge. He also stated he had talked with someone willing to coach the team, without pay.
Matt said each team member would need to supply their own clubs and felt they would be willing to buy their own shirts. When asked how many were interested, he said 5 were definitely interested so far.
He also said it was pass the registration date to meet the IHSA deadline, so the fee would be $100 and cover both boys and girls as opposed to $50. He indicated those interested would probably be willing to pay the fee if that was an issue.
In closing Matt said golf was a sport that could be enjoyed on into adulthood as opposed to other sports. Matt also said with consolidation being considered, golf would probably be a sport that would be offered anyway.
President Jon Corzatt thanked him for coming and said they would discuss the issue.
Apparently, a discussion was held following the closed session, but due to no motion being made, no action was taken.
In other business, the board approved purchasing 18 high school girls basketball uniforms. The company will reduce the cost by $7 per uniform due to the last ones waistbands not holding up, Mr. Barber reported. Barber is also seeking repair on the old uniform waistbands.
The Junior High gym is done for this year, Junior High Principal Lyman Schar reported. Fans have been installed, outside windows have been foamed and the conduit painted. Barber said that he will be applying for a grant to install new lighting in the Junior High gymnasium next year.
The board accepted a $2,000 donation from the Twomey Company and will decide what to use it for at a later date.
Other business following closed session included:
Those present included: Monty Waddell, Melissa Livermore, Mike Bundy, Dale Buss, Lyman Schar, Superintendent Barber, Sharri Richard, Julie Hicks, Terri Copeland, Jon Corzatt, Barry Bigger, and Matt Kane. Karen Jack and Doug Brooks, board members were absent.
The next meeting will be held on Monday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m.
