The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
The first permanent settler in Honey Creek precinct (Lomax Township) was Captain Redman, an officer in the War of 1812 in about 1825 or 1826. He built his family a log cabin in which they lived for many years.
The Pence family from Lycoming County, Pa. arrived in 1838 landing at Shokokon after having traveled down the Ohio and up the Mississippi.
They moved into an unchinked log house(cracks between logs were not filled so wind, rain, and snow blew inward), one end of which was occupied by the Tull family.
Terrible hardships were endured that first winter by both family: sickness and lack of food plagued them daily. The next spring the Pences built their own log house in Section 15.
