Moment in History

In 1861 when the Civil War was finally recognized as being a long conflict, the Henderson County Board voted a tax of 3/4th mill on each dollar's valuation of property for the support of the families of soldiers who volunteered.

At a 1862 meeting in Olena the county board for the purpose of encouraging enlistment, passed a levy of two mills on the dollar of taxable property for the support of families.

The next September they voted 3 mills on the dollar to be used as a bounty fund to paid to volunteers trying to encourage enlistment to meet President Lincoln's call for 300,000 men.
