The Village of Stronghurst board voted to sign a five year contract with Waste Management on Monday evening for garbage pick up. Jackson Disposal was the only other bid for the board to consider.
The five year contract is subject to yearly increases of not more than 3.5% and could be less depending on the cost of living rate. The rate is $11.40 per month per household with recycling or $9.85 per month without recycling. This will include two clean up days per year. While recycling could be included, with same day pick up, they must first talk with Maple City Recycle to determine the length of time that was agreed upon with their firm.
Residents of the community are asked to remember it is illegal to park vehicles on or across the sidewalk.
The city burn pile is open during the day and 1/2 day on Saturday, which is working fairly well. There has been another incident of illegal disposal lately.
In May a discussion was held on changing the medical insurance for village employees. Monday Tony Griepentrog reported it was decided to remain with the present insurance company and keep everything the same. It appears there were so many variables with the new policy and the cost would be the same as the present policy.
Two more plaques will be hung along the highway for Teresa Brokaw and Jerry Morris's track accomplishments this year.
Cory Nichols' bid was accepted for the shed behind the new city hall building.
The wiring is done in the village park.
The prevailing wage ordinance was passed.
An ordinance was passed pertaining to grass and weeds. Unmown grass and weeds on properties may be cut and the property owner charged. If charges are not paid a lien can be placed on the property. (see ordinance on page 12).
Deputy Barber presented the deputies report for the month of June which included: 1 arrest for illegal parking; 1 arrest for squealing/screeching tires; 3 burglaries; disorderly conduct; DUI and one illegal transportation of alcohol.
Present were: Eric Chockley, Eileen Cargill, Bob Scott, Terry Myers, Tony Griepentrog, Bob Carmean, Frank Avery, David Vancil, Deputy Barber, Lori Russell and Richard Knutstrom. Board member Lawrence Neff not present.
Next meeting will be held on Monday, August 5, 2002, at 7 p.m. at the Stronghurst Fire Station.
