La Harpe Community School Board
Holds Short January Meeting

The La Harpe School Board held a regular meeting Monday night, January 14th, in the School District Library. Board members in attendance were Don Latherow, Larry Caston, Lawrence Johnson, Ricky Johnson, Mark Irish, Dan Horton, and Barbara Cox. Also present were Superintendant Jerry Arthur, Principals Charlotte Davis and Charles Apt, and Pat Deitrich, and Jerry Brown. Brown gave a report of the latest meeting of the Committee of Ten regarding possible consolidation.

The board accepted with regret the resignation of Diane Rouse as a teacher helper and approved the employment of Peggy Bundy as a teacher helper and Elizabeth Bruns as a substitute teacher aide. Also approved were requests by John Napolitano, Susan Bray, and Todd Porter for reimbursement for college courses taken at WIU, the second reading and adoption of Board Policy #714. 01 Harassment and Bullying of Students Prohibited, and requests by Shawn Cortelyou and the Union Church for use of the high school gym.

Mr. Apt reported that the Bi-County boys and girls basketball tournament will be held at Yorkwood the week of January 10-25, the girls basketball regional will be held at Southern and we will play Union in the first round on February 6th, and the Bi-County speech contest will be held at Avon on January 19th.

Mrs. Davis reported that the Eagle Booster's Club helped with the concession stand, programs, and the Hospitality room at the Hancock County Tournament held at La Harpe.

Brenda Sparrow and the Title I staff will present a workshop at the Title I Conference in February on in-class math instructional strategies and assessments we use that tie to the Illinois Learning Standards, twelve faculty members, PreK through third grade, attended Dr. Helm's presentation on Brain Development and Implications for Classroom Instruction, Arlynn Hitz and Laurie Myers presented information they learned from this meeting to their team meeting, and that she had attended the Early Childhood Directors' Conference on January 7th and 8th. Sixth graders completed the drug prevention program provided by the Hancock Mental Health Department.

A graduation program was held on December 20th with students presenting skits they had created and receiving certificates of completion of the Project Albert program. Parents and fifth grade classes were invited to attend.

The Junior High Honors group held a Holiday dance on December 7th, the Student Council sponsored an Olympics activity on January 10th, and the PreK students performed a Christmas music program for parents and family on December 12th.
