The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment in History

From 1851 to 1858 Bedford Precinct saw a new tide of emigration, mostly Jerseyans from Fulton County, Illinois, where they had settled.

Many were from Somerset, Middlesex, Hunter-ton, Sussex, and other towns along the Raritan River. A trading post was needed now that so many settlers were in the area, but a dispute arose over its location.

On one side was Josiah Brokaw who favored the west side of Honey Creek and opposing him was Peter Tharp and others living near Raritan's present location.

A vote was taken to settle the matter and a site between the two branches of Honey Creek was selected.

In 1856 M.M.Field erected the first store building.
