The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment in History

Relics of bygone days by chance are found in the fields and bluffs of Henderson County.

In the 1882 history of the county are noted the Indian mounds along the bluff near Gladstone and northwest of Olena.

A post of an Indian council lodge was proudly displayed by Alexander Lynn at his home found in the SW 1/4 of Sec.10 of Gladstone Township.

On the bluffs near the Frank Galbraith's residence was found a small stone, three inches in diameter, concave on both sides, one side had bird tracks and the other a carved bird.

This is known as an Indian totem.

Supposedly, it was taken to Burlington and became a part of the Iowa State Museum.

Even today, arrowheads, Indian plows, etc. are found as fields are plowed and woods are cleared recalling a time when only primitive Indians stalked the bluffs.
