The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.
In the winter of 1832 when a great deal of excitement raged through the settlement about the Blackhawk War, pioneers made their way to the various forts.
The first one built in Henderson County was near Yellow Banks (Pence's Fort). In South Henderson Township a fort and block-house was constructed in the yard where Mr. Samuel Lynn's house stood in 1887.
The place was first enclosed by 12 ft. slabs set in the ground, inside of which was built the block-house, consisting of two stories, the upper one projecting out about two feet over the lower one, each having loop holes on all sides through which to shoot.
Previous to this a temporary fort had been built around W.R.Jameson' house by sitting pickets in the ground around the house.
