The Hancock-Henderson Quill, Inc.

Moment In History

Oft times we forget that the French explorers and trappers traverse this area long before settlers began arriving in earnest in the 1830's.

Proof of their presence was found in 1860 as evidenced by this short article from the Oquawka Spectator, Feb.23:

"The Association (Old Settlers) also in presenting its thanks to William Drew, son of Captain Drew (Abner) of Henderson Bottom, invite attention to his valuable and curious contribution made through R.W.Richey, Esq. in the shape of an iron trap pronounced by old settlers, an otter trap.

It was found on Otter Island opposite the mouth of the Henderson River some 18 years ago (1842) and bears the stamp of "1725" and is supposed to have belonged to the early French trappers."

Too bad this item has disappeared into history; what a spectacular addition it would make to the Henderson County Historical Society's museum at Raritan!

If within your cupboards or on your shelves you have similar items, considerate donating them to the museum where all may learn from the past.
