Thunder Varsity Baseball Team Sweeps Three
The La Harpe-Northwestern varsity baseball enjoyed a 3-0 week last week.
On Wednesday, April 10, the Thunder hosted the Nauvoo-Colusa Vikings. L-N was able to tally 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to post a 9-6 victory.
Jason Myers picked up the win in relief of starting pitcher Jensen Jones. Myers also had the game winning RBI, on a single, driving home Christopher Link.
Lane Metcalf sealed the game 2 batters later with a 2 run single to plate the final 2 runs. Jones, Metcalf and Jason Siegworth enjoyed 3-hit days offensively for the Thunder.
Myers collected 2 hits, with Michael Palmer adding a big single that tied the game at 6. Jones also had a double and 3 stolen bases. Siegworth had a long home run and 3 RBIs.
On Friday, April 12th, the Thunder hosted a very good North Fulton team, opening Bi-County Conference play. The first game was a classic, with the Thunder posting a 7-6 victory in 6 innings. North Fulton took a 6-3 lead in the top of the sixth, scoring 3 in the frame.
L-N answered with 4 in the bottom of the inning to record the win. Three singles by Jason Apt, Jensen Jones and Chase DeCounter set the table.
N-F changed pitchers and brought in their ace Clint Buchen, to face Jason Myers. Myers delivered a big 2-run single to center to pull the Thunder to within 6-5. One out later Lane Metcalf rapped another single center, scoring DeCounter. The ball hopped over the center fielder's glove in the process, as Myers raced around from first base with the winning run. Myers also collected the win on the mound for L-N. Jones and Metcalf had 3 hits each in the contest. Jason Siegworth also had a RBI.
Game two was all about Jason Siegworth. The big left hander took the mound and was dominating. He struck out 10 in the 5 inning contest, leading the Thunder to a 4-1 victory. He also helped himself with a 2 run home run. A single by Jensen Jones and a double by Lane Metcalf were the only other hits for L-N, but it was all Siegworth needed on this day.
Jason Apt and Kyle Duffie had RBI's for the Thunder as well. The 2 wins Friday pushed the Thunder's record to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the Bi-County Conference.
