Raiders Begin Season

The Southern Jr. High Boys Track and Field team finally got to participate in a meet on Friday, April 5 at Avon, after having their first four meets of the season cancelled due to poor weather!

With only three weeks left before Sectional entry forms must be complete, every meet the Raiders can get in from now o will be vitally important in determining if they can repeat as State Champions this year.

At Avon, the 8th grade boys easily outdistanced their opponents in the team standings! Southern finished with 82 points while Avon and Cuba had 23 points each.

Winning events for the 8th graders from Southern were Darick Clark: 400 M Dash, 800 M Run, and Long Jump; Jerry Morris: High Jump and Discus; Adam Corzatt: 100 M Hurdles; and Abe Chockley: 200 M Dash.

Morris' toss of 141'2" in the discus broke the Southern 8th grade record of 133'6" held by Brad Mowen!

Morris also jumped 5'6" in the high jump which is only one inch off of the current school record!

Corzatt ran a 16.93 in the hurdles, a nice effort for the first meet of the year. The school record in that event is 16.0.

Relay teams that took first for the 8th grade were both the 4x200 team of Chockley, Corzatt, Morris, and Clark, and the 4X400 team of Tanner Hartman, Blake Fox, Ryan Utter, and Ross Gullberg.

The 7th grade season figures to be a tough one for Southern as there are only a hand full of 7th graders out for track this year.

The rest of the team consists of 5th and 6th graders. The 7th grade team scores were Avon 58, Cuba 46, and Southern 30.

Andy Chockley began the day with a win in the 110 M Hurdles. The only other win for the 7th grade was in the 4x200 M Relay where Taylor Hoover, Chockley, Brice Jack, and Sean Webb sprinted to first place.

The surprise effort for the 7th grade team came from 5th grader Layton Housman who, in his first track meet ever, took second place in the 1600 M Run and third place in the 800 M Run!
