Farmers are finishing up harvest, the cold winds are blowing and leaves are circling what once were blooming flower beds, and in two weeks, we will be sitting down to a "Thanksgiving Feast" with much to be grateful for... and then, before you know it, it's Christmas!
Father Time stops for no man, woman, or child, but keeps marching on. But one thing for sure, with that extra hour of daylight savings time back, he is sure to use it to stop by Stronghurst next Friday, September 17th for the annual Christmas Walk. It's a merry festival which puts everyone in a good mood to put folks in the "Christmas Spirit"! And the good Lord knows this world could use some cheering up.
The Stronghurst Booster Club has been busy organizing and businesses are preparing to treat folks to some food, entertainment, discounts, and holiday cheer around Stronghurst. There will be Christmas Trees, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Horse drawn wagon rides, so dress warm, barrel train rides for the kids, and even pictures with Santa along with Santa's treats.
There are many drawings, and discounts in businesses too. WRAM radio will be in town to broadcast the good news of the town's holiday walk, and "The Quill" is hoping they will come inside and report on "Dorf the Elf" which originally was a segment done by Tim Conway. "Dorf" is being portrayed by the popular local actor Dan Ashton who has been portraying everyone from Paul Bell, reporter, President Abraham Lincoln, a Civil War Rebel officer under General E. Lee, "Buddy" from The Elf, to Ebeneezer Scrooge.
The old John Deere Neff building now known as the Flatt building of Brad and Rhonda Flatt's houses the Nativity Scene but will have some decorated Christmas trees including a tree and a snowman made out of tires. Rhonda and Brad, busy with harvest, will find time to get the building ready to entertain all the friends of Stronghurst who appear.
Bring all the family,and your friends for luckily, Stronghurst Main Street and businesses are small enough to be cozy and homey and you should find friendly faces everywhere you go.
Starting today, each business will be selling raffle tickets for two drawings. One is for a couple's get-away, and the other is for a $500 memorial brick you can have lettered to be placed in the Dr. Bob Pogue Memorial Spray Park.
You can also take part in some good-will giving. FOCC and Toys for Tots are collecting toys and Fran Work and the Ladies Auxiliary at the American Legion building will be collecting for the deployed area soldiers and for the Illinois Veterans home in Quincy.
